We haven’t parsed the details of President Trump’s plans to revise legal immigration. Its chance of success looks bleak in the current political climate.
Rather than discuss it, critics are reacting to the separate issue of illegal immigration. That, too, is important; but a change in legal entry requirements is long overdue and the Trump emphasis on skills and capabilities is a plus.
The current system of granting legal entry relies much too heavily on family ties. That may be nice for extended families, but without any filter for abilities, it adds welfare burdens and costs to the United States, rather than contributions.
