The COVID-19 outbreak will probably push New Hampshire’s unemployment rate up to 20%, a state employment official said Thursday.

Nearly 9,500 Granite Staters filed new unemployment claims last week. Nationally, 3 million Americans filed new claims for unemployment benefits.

Initial filings in New Hampshire declined from 12,475 to 9,491 for the week ending May 9. Richard Lavers, deputy commissioner for employment security, said the numbers continue to trend in the right direction, but he said they also reflect that a lot of people in New Hampshire are hurting.
