After being forced to turn to the courts to get a hydropower dam fixed last year, New Hampshire is looking for more authority to take action when a crumbling structure is privately owned.

A bill heard Tuesday in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee allow dam safety officials to access a dam after the National Weather Service issues a flood advisory and the structure is seen as posing a threat to residents or property downstream. The state would be able to go onto the property and take action to address an emergency involving the dam. The dam owner would be billed for any repairs.
