Peter Somssich is proposing an increase to state vehicle-registration fees which, said the Democratic state representative, would raise about $8 million a year and be earmarked for highway-noise abatement, as well as repairs to secondary state roads.

The funding is proposed inĀ House Bill 510, which is also sponsored by local Democratic state Reps. Tamara Le of North Hampton and Laura Pantelakos of Portsmouth and Sen. Martha Fuller Clark, D-Portsmouth. The proposed law would raise state registration fees based on vehicle weights because, Somssich said, heavier vehicles cause more road damage.
