Emergency medical technicians and rescue squad workers who are killed in the line of duty would be eligible for death benefits under a bill that has passed both chambers of the New Hampshire Legislature.

The bill would expand a law that already provides $100,000 to the survivors of police officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty. In urging her colleagues to support it Thursday, Democratic Sen. Cindy Rosenwald, of Nashua, said the state’s opioid crisis has put medical technicians and rescue squad workers in increasingly volatile situations, making the change appropriate and timely.
