The State Senate approved legislation Thursday night banning discrimination in public schools, a policy change sought by the Governor’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion but opposed by others as unnecessary.

Advocates for transgender students said while the state’s 2018 anti-discrimination law protects them against bias in housing, employment and public accommodation, the state’s new civil rights unit in the Attorney General’s office does not have the power to bring a cause of action on bias complaints in schools.
