On a party-line vote, the Senate on Thursday advanced a bill that would allow Granite Staters to begin the voter registration process when they visit the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Under the Secure Modern Accurate Registration Technology (SMART) Act, SB 7, a New Hampshire citizen of voting age who applies for a new driver’s license, to update their license or for a non-driver identification card could allow his or her information to be transferred to the Secretary of State’s office. The Secretary of State’s office would then mail a postcard to the applicant on which he or she can select a party affiliation or decline to register.
