Seacoast lawmakers say a House bill allowing cities and towns to collect a fee on hotel rooms will boost tourist communities, but some hotel owners say the fee is another burden on local businesses.
The bill sponsored by state Rep. Mike Edgar, D-Hampton, HB 641, passed the House Thursday 209 to 146 and would allow municipalities to implement a daily occupancy fee of up to $2 on local hotel room rentals. Its sponsors say the bill would help make up for what they believe is inequitable redistribution of rooms and meals tax dollars, divided among communities based on population, not the amount they contribute.
