The town of Salem is trying to hit Michael Bates with fines of nearly $228,000 and a $5,421 legal bill for the piles of inkjet printers and boxes that littered his former Salem residence, but town officials aren’t optimistic that they’ll see much of the money.

A hearing was held Thursday in Rockingham County Superior Court in the town’s case against Bates, whose messy property at 45 Maclarnon Road was at the center of a lengthy legal battle before it was foreclosed, auctioned off in June and eventually taken over by a new owner who cleaned it up in August and is renovating the house.
