Citing legal concerns, Mayor Joyce Craig on Tuesday vetoed what she termed a “reckless” proposal from Ward 3 Alderman Tim Baines to alter city ordinances to permit downtown business owners to control the use of sidewalks outside their storefronts year-round, despite a 12-0 show of support for the plan from fellow board members.
Baines said he was disappointed by the veto following what he termed “a sad night at City Hall.”
“I’ve come to realize if it’s not the mayor’s plan, it’s not a good plan,” said Baines. “She wants us to be open and honest, but in the end if what comes down doesn’t come from her desk she doesn’t want it.”
